Project Context vs Task Management: What's the Difference?

Defining the two clearly

Task management is a list of discrete, closeable items — what's left to do, who's doing it, when it's due. Project context is everything around that list: why the project exists, what's already been decided, what's been tried and ruled out, and what state things were left in. Tasks are a snapshot of remaining work. Context is the accumulated reasoning that makes the remaining work make sense.

Why conflating them causes tools to fail at both jobs

Cramming context into task descriptions makes task lists cluttered and hard to scan quickly, defeating the whole point of a task manager. Cramming tasks into a context tool loses the fast, checkbox-driven workflow that makes task management useful day to day. Trying to make one tool do both usually means it does neither one well — the task view gets buried under paragraphs of rationale, or the context gets flattened into a checklist that strips out the reasoning that made it worth recording.

What each one should actually track

A task manager should track: what's open, what's assigned to whom, what's due when. Nothing more. A context system should track: why the project exists, what's been decided and why, what's been tried, what the current blocker is, and what the next action is once that blocker clears. The overlap between the two is small — really just the next action, which naturally belongs to both.

How they fit together in a real workflow

The two work best side by side rather than merged: a task manager like Linear or Asana for the day-to-day list of what's open, and a lightweight context layer for the reasoning and history that gives that list meaning. You open the task manager to see what's next. You open the context layer when you've been away long enough that "what's next" alone isn't enough — when you need to remember why it's next, and what already happened before you got here.
